Today’s Zone Brief

I've been MIA for two weeks. Turns out becoming a citizen doesn't automatically make you better at time management. Who knew?

On the bright side, we hit 750 subscribers while I was gone. Apparently, some of you don't mind the inconsistency.

This week: What 17 years of earning my place in America taught me about work, belonging, and why pressure creates better citizens.

Some quick pieces to keep you focused, building, and honest with yourself this week:

The Pressure Test

My first Fourth of July as a U.S. citizen wasn’t about fireworks. It was about standing by a cheap grill, burning meat, surrounded by some of the best people, and realizing that I’d been working for this moment since 2008, even when I didn’t know it.

A few weeks earlier, I’d visited a federal building in New Jersey to receive my citizenship paperwork, capping off a seventeen-year goal to be officially part of the country I chose as my home.

Seventeen years here, from exchange student to citizen. From the initial raw excitement and homesickness to calling it home.

No flag-waving. Just a fact. I chose this place. And this place reshaped me back, completely.

In those seventeen years, I’ve learned a few things the hard way. They won’t show up in my passport or resume, but they’ve built my real ID.

1 - It doesn’t matter where you’re from

When you first land here, you think your story matters. It doesn’t, not once you step into the arena. It doesn’t matter what your life back home was like or what your country’s politics were.

Insight: What matters is what you do once you are here. If you can show up and work hard. If you can build, close, and deliver. That’s something no one can take away from you. Work is the great leveler. Action > origin.

2 - The middle is your edge

For a long time, I felt like I belonged neither here nor there. I wasn’t American enough for America, and I wasn’t Turkish enough for Türkiye.

Now I don’t pick sides; I am both. I know how to navigate a subway full of New Yorkers and a tea house full of Turks. I know how to code-switch mid-sentence, read people twice, and adapt my pitch on the fly.

Insight: The in-between feeling that used to feel like a defect? It’s my edge. I can plug into different worlds. I can adapt my style and tone to fit any room or situation. But I don’t betray my core identity and principles just to fit in, either.

3 - The work is the flag

Most Americans inherit their citizenship; I earned mine. That changes everything about how you see work.

Work is what proves you belong here, every day. Nobody can take that away, no matter what the news says or who’s in office.

When you’re working with an expiration date on your visa, you don’t get the luxury of coasting or taking it easy. Every performance review matters. Every project could be your last. Every relationship is intentional because you’re building from zero.

Insight: Pressure creates better citizens. When you fight to be here, you understand what here means. The work isn’t just work; it’s your proof of belonging.

The Takeaway

On my first Fourth as a citizen, I'm grateful for the pressure that built this. I’ve had my close friends with me. I grilled too many hot dogs. I didn’t lose a finger to a firework.

Great success.

Seventeen years after I first set foot in the U.S., my takeaway is simple. Home isn't where you're from. It's where you're free to become who you're meant to be. Some people inherit this freedom. Others earn it under pressure. Either way, you have to prove it. Daily.
